Show 025 – Subtractive EQ and the Electro-Voice RE20

This week Jon buys a used Electro-Voice RE20 and does a review.  After we did the show and thought that the mic sounded a little weak in the bass, it was compared to two other identical mics.  Jon got the dud.  Ryan answers a listener’s question about using subtractive EQ to fix your mixes.

  1. hey guys,
i really like your show and i listen to it every week. i’m recording a band this week and the bass player brought a sansamp bass preamp. i’m excited to reamp his tracks through it.

  2. Great show! I am going to go through the EQ section and take some notes on your suggestions.

I have a question for you. I would like to step up to a better mic pre; right now, my choices are cheap a cheap ART pre or the emulations in my Toneport. My mics range from SM 58’s to a R0DE NT1A. What would be the minimum I would have to spend on a pre to get a noticeably better sound? And could you suggest some likely candidates?

Thanks, I look forward to every show.
