Show 94 – Interview With William Rigout, Recording A Violin, and Mo Carey Asks Some Questions

Jon is out this show because his daughter Alice was born the day we tape the show.  Congratulations to Jon and Holly.

This week Ryan interviews William Rigout about the Château d’Hérouville, also named the Honky Château by Elton John, where many notable artists recorded in the 1970’s.  Jesse does a segment on how to record a violin with examples if different microphones at different distances.  Our guest Mo Carey asks us a few questions from an recording artist’s point of view.

  1. Crongrats to jon and his familly

    Thank you for inviting me.

Here is a link to the latest album ever recorded there, it’s not my kind of thing but you can hear the room on some track that start with the guitare only, and even the old steinway and the stairs reverb on some choir.

And just as a reminder for ryan, did you try this (cause i know you want to buy a console) ? http://www.slatedigital.com/vcc.php

keep up the good work !

ps : a segment about recording acoustic bass would be great ! (but maybe you did it already)

  2. England calling! Hi guys, hope this makes it in time. I am recording a drum kit next weekend in the living room. I’m planning on using the Glyn Johns boundary mic approach. The mics I have suggest using my two AT 4033s as the boundary mics, then I will use an SM58 on the snare – so that leaves an SM58 or an Oktava MK12 for the kick drum. Or would the Oktava be better on the snare (maybe in hypercardioid mode) and the 57 in the kick? I won’t have a huge amount of time for experimentation so any advice to get it right up front is very welcome. Oh for an SM7. Over and out. Keep up the great work. Oh and congratulations Jon!
